Abstract: salmonellosis is an important zoonosis, considered the leading cause of bacterial infections, and is associated with the consumption of poultry products. as alternative control, organic acids have been widely used. however, little is known about the immune status of poultry production, and an evaluation of this status is necessary to protect against disease and to ensure the safe application of therapeutic agents or prophylactic vaccination. this study aimed to verify the behavior of the immune system of birds previously infected with salmonella enteritidis (se) treated with a compound of organic acids in different concentrations administered via water and food, compared with the infected birds and untreated. one hundred and twenty broilers were orally inoculated with 1ml of se at a concentration of 1.0x108 cfu/ml, at 1 and 2-days-old and divided into six treatments with two repetitions of 200, 400, 500 and 1000ppm organic acid. from 35-days-old birds of all groups were collected aliquots of 3ml of blood into a tube containing edta for the evaluation of immune cells by flow cytometry. we then analyzed the percentages of circulating cd4+, cd8β+, mhc i+ mhc ii+, tcrvβ1+, cd28+ + and tcrvβ2. for microbiological analysis were collected caecal tonsils of these birds. we found that organic acids in dosages 1000ppm 500ppm in water and in feed for 2 to 7 days before slaughter, respectively, were effective in reducing se infection in broilers, proven by microbiological method and demonstrated through the behavior of immune cells. the infected birds showed a lower proportion of circulating t helper cells compared with infected poultry, but treated with ao or with the uninfected group. the same trend can be observed for cd28+ cells, and mhc iibright+ tcrvβ 1+, and with lower resolution, for cd8β+.

Abstract: Coccidiosis is a disease caused by intracellular protozoan parasites, specifically belonging to the genus Eimeria. These parasites target the gastrointestinal tract in different types of hosts, causing sores in the intestinal lining. The presence of these lesions reduces the animal’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients, significantly impacting their overall performance. The current study aimed to explore the potential correlation between seasonal variations and the incidence of Eimeria spp-induced lesions in broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tracts in Brazil from 2012 to 2018. A total of 8,607 broiler chickens, aged 14 to 42 days, were sampled from 103 poultry integrated companies in Brazil to conduct intestinal health examinations. The sampling process involved selecting 3 to 6 chickens from each poultry house for examination. The assessment included various abnormalities such as shedding of intestinal cells and excessive fluid and mucus presence, thickening and tension of the intestines, food movement, roughened mucosal surface resembling a Turkish towel in the small intestine, tissue death, duodenal inflammation, intestinal inflammation, gizzard erosion, presence of worms and bedding material, and ingestion of mealworms. During the seasons, winter exhibited the highest average occurrence of Eimeria maxima microorganisms at 52.83%, with E. acervulina following closely at 26.42% in second place. In spring, E. maxima had an occurrence of 11.31%, while in fall, E. tenella had the lowest occurrence at 6.74%.
A Semiotic Analysis of Programming Languages  [PDF]
Ricardo Maciel Gazoni
Journal of Computer and Communications (JCC) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jcc.2018.63007
Abstract: The paper presents an analysis of computer programming languages based on the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce. The author describes how such languages could evolve in order to achieve some of the expressive characteristics of natural languages. This description evinces otherwise unnoticed differences between natural languages and programming languages, showing that Peircean semiotics is an efficient analysis tool. This suggests further research on the technical features needed to implement an easier way to program computers.
A Model of the Market Process with Numerical Simulation  [PDF]
Ricardo Luis Chaves Feijó, Fabio Barbieri
Modern Economy (ME) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/me.2018.911118
Abstract: The paper simulates the price-arbitrage process at the market for homogeneous good and tries to show the convergence into a single price from different cross-linked markets of this homogeneous good. It examines the problem by random generation of values in the simulation environment offered by the Matlab program. It is emphasized here the approach in which the agent’s alertness is crucial to the market. The emphasis is not on the price that equilibrates supply and demand, since there is not a single price for a homogeneous commodity. A homogeneous good is negotiated with different prices in different parts of a market. The paper explains the process in which the agent’s alertness leads to a uniform price in terms of a simulation model, in the belief that that technique leads to a better understanding of the precise nature of the market process and the agent’s alertness role in equilibration. The paper also discusses the effects of the heterogeneous agents and market barriers in the market convergence process. The innovative feature of the paper is the simulation experiment.

Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2013,
Abstract: In this article we study Hopf bifurcations and small amplitude limit cycles in a family of quadratic systems in the three dimensional space called Rucklidge systems. Bifurcation analysis at the equilibria of Rucklidge system is pushed forward toward the calculation of the second Lyapunov coefficient, which makes possible the determination of the Lyapunov and higher order structural stability.

Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2010,
Abstract: In this article, we study the nonlinear dynamics of a quadratic system in the three dimensional space which can be obtained from a scalar third order differential equation. More precisely, we study the stability and bifurcations which occur in a parameter dependent quadratic system in the three dimensional space. We present an analytical study of codimension one, two and three Hopf bifurcations, generic Bogdanov-Takens and fold-Hopf bifurcations.

Abstract: Background: Trabeculectomy does not always work as long as necessary to control glaucoma. This study aimed to describe the initial outcomes of a surgical technique for restoring failed trabeculectomies. Methods: We reviewed patients with failed trabeculectomy with mitomycin (MMC) who underwent limbus-based revision. After the dissection of the subconjunctival area through a smaller incision (3 mm), MMC was applied and episcleral fibrosis was excised. Each criterion was classified as complete or qualified for glaucoma medication. Results: Nineteen patients (19 eyes) were included in this study. The mean follow-up was 9.4 ± 8.6 months. At the last follow-up visit, the mean intraocular pressure was reduced from 20.9 ± 8.4 (range, 12 - 44 mmHg) to 11.6 ± 3.6 mm Hg (range, 6 - 19 mmHg) (p < 0.01). The mean number of glaucoma medications was reduced from 2.6 ± 0.8 to 0.4 ± 0.7 during the same period (p < 0.01). At 6 months postoperatively, the qualified success rate was 68% and 85% for stricter and less strict criteria, respectively. Two cases of transient leakage and reoperation were required in three eyes. No sight-threatening complications were noted. Conclusions: Our initial results suggest that limbus-based revision is an effective alternative to restoring failed trabeculectomies with minor postoperative complications.

Abstract: Because of inadequate knowledge and funding, the use of biodiversity indicators is often suggested as a way to support management decisions. Consequently, many studies have analyzed the performance of certain groups as indicator taxa. However, in addition to knowing whether certain groups can adequately represent the biodiversity as a whole, we must also know whether they show similar responses to the main structuring processes affecting biodiversity. Here we present an application of the metacommunity framework for evaluating the effectiveness of biodiversity indicators. Although the metacommunity framework has contributed to a better understanding of biodiversity patterns, there is still limited discussion about its implications for conservation and biomonitoring. We evaluated the effectiveness of indicator taxa in representing spatial variation in macroinvertebrate community composition in Atlantic Forest streams, and the processes that drive this variation. We focused on analyzing whether some groups conform to environmental processes and other groups are more influenced by spatial processes, and on how this can help in deciding which indicator group or groups should be used. We showed that a relatively small subset of taxa from the metacommunity would represent 80% of the variation in community composition shown by the entire metacommunity. Moreover, this subset does not have to be composed of predetermined taxonomic groups, but rather can be defined based on random subsets. We also found that some random subsets composed of a small number of genera performed better in responding to major environmental gradients. There were also random subsets that seemed to be affected by spatial processes, which could indicate important historical processes. We were able to integrate in the same theoretical and practical framework, the selection of biodiversity surrogates, indicators of environmental conditions, and more importantly, an explicit integration of environmental and spatial processes into the selection approach.

Abstract: the combined use of radiation therapy (rt) and androgen deprivation for patients with localized high-risk prostate cancer is commonly accepted as the standard treatment among uro-oncologists. preclinical studies have provided rationale for the use of this combination. additionally, results of phase 3 studies using conventional doses of rt have supported the combined approach. other phase 3 studies have also shown a benefit for using higher doses of rt; however, the role of androgen deprivation in this context is not clear. the optimal duration of the androgen deprivation, in both the neoadjuvant and adjuvant setting, is still under investigation. this article critically reviews the data on the use of rt combined with androgen deprivation for the treatment of high-risk prostate cancer with emphasis on the results of phase 3 trials.
